Renting in Uithuizermeeden: a small private sector in a buyer-dominated market

Uithuizermeeden is essentially an owner-occupied neighbourhood: 66% of the more than 2,100 homes are owned by residents. The rental market is limited in size, with housing association homes (25% of the stock) accounting for the majority. Private sector rental homes are scarce: in the past twelve months, 28 were rented out in the private sector, with an average rent of €1,121 per month and a range of €600 to €3,500 per month. The average floor area was 52 m², indicating that these are often smaller homes or apartments. The WOZ value in Uithuizermeeden, at €225,000, is slightly below the municipal average of Het Hogeland (€251,000), making the village relatively affordable compared to other centres in the municipality. See the current supply and the most recent average rent at the top of this page.

Uithuizermeeden: peace and green, but little buzz for young people

Uithuizermeeden is a village you won't quickly forget once you've lived there, but it's not for everyone. The atmosphere is quiet, orderly and green. On the neighbourhood page of Uithuizermeeden, residents give the village an average of 6.0 based on reviews. The scores vary widely: for green space the neighbourhood scores a perfect 10, for safety and accessibility both an 8. But for education and amenities the village gets only a 1, and the community score stands at a meagre 3. That says something about what you can and cannot expect here.

Resident Benthe aptly describes the village as "small, quiet and Christian" and gives it a 6. Her criticism is clear: in her experience, Uithuizermeeden is mainly a village for older residents. There are hardly any places for young people, the range of shops is limited, and there is no secondary school in the village itself. Anyone wanting secondary education has to rely on the train. Fortunately, the station is located in the centre of the village, making accessibility by public transport much more pleasant than you would expect in such a small centre. The age distribution confirms this picture: the largest group of residents is between 45 and 65 years old, and the 65-plus group is also heavily represented. The group of young adults between 25 and 45 is relatively small.

If you want more space outside the village, the rural area of Uithuizermeeden is an option, although the supply there is even more limited. Within the village itself there are also differences: see what is available in Uithuizermeeden Noord or Uithuizermeeden Zuid if you have a specific preference for a part of the village. For those who want to combine the peace of the Hogeland with slightly more amenities, nearby villages such as Leens or Ulrum are worth exploring.

Renting in Uithuizermeeden: who does it work for, and who not?

Renting in Uithuizermeeden best suits people who consciously choose peace, nature and a slow pace. Families with young children or seniors who no longer need to travel daily will feel most at home here. For young people or those dependent on local amenities and nightlife, this village is less suitable, as the resident reviews also show. The private sector supply is limited, so those looking for social housing would do well to register with a housing association in good time. If you are considering a longer term in the region, it is also worth looking at homes for sale in Uithuizermeeden, especially given the relatively low WOZ values.

I mainly think it's a village for old, grey and boring people. There are no places for young people, few shops and no secondary school, so you have to travel a lot by train (I personally find that awful), but luckily there is a train station in the middle of the village. Because there are mainly seniors living here, it is generally very quiet. The only thing I find unsafe about Uithuizermeeden is the fact that there are no streetlights outside the village, and people drive very fast in the polders, which is very annoying when you are cycling.
