Living in Binnenstad, Schiedam

Binnenstad in Schiedam is the historic heart of the city, with narrow streets, canals and the characteristic windmills that made Schiedam world-famous. Here you live among monumental buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries, interspersed with post-war reconstruction and more recent renovation projects. Many homes are upper floors above shops on the Hoogstraat or apartments in converted warehouses and former gin distilleries. It is not a neighbourhood of terraced houses with gardens, but of compact city homes with character.

The atmosphere is urban and lively, but also messy. Binnenstad attracts a mix of residents: many single people (665 one-person households out of 1,238 homes), young professionals and starters between 25 and 45 years old. Only 25% of households are married, which confirms the picture of a neighbourhood for people moving on. In recent years, investment has been made in public spaces, but residents notice that liveability is under pressure.

Facilities in Binnenstad

For daily shopping you are well served: there is an Albert Heijn on the Hoogstraat and a Lidl on the Broersvest, both within walking distance. The Hoogstraat and Stadserf form the shopping area with smaller specialist shops, catering establishments and a weekly market. For schools, there are primary schools such as De Violier and the Stedelijk Gymnasium Schiedam in the immediate vicinity. Sports facilities are more limited in Binnenstad itself, but Sporthal Margriet and swimming pool Groenoord are within cycling distance. Green space is scarce: Julianapark and Provenierspark on the outskirts offer some relief, but in the core it is mainly stone and water. The resident score for green space is therefore a meagre 5.0.

Accessibility from Binnenstad

Accessibility scores the highest of all categories with a 9.0, and that is correct. Schiedam Centrum station is a five-minute walk away and offers direct trains to Rotterdam Centraal (8 minutes), The Hague and Delft. Schiedam Centrum metro station (lines A and B) takes you quickly to Rotterdam-Zuid and Erasmus MC. By car, you can quickly reach the motorways towards Amsterdam or the coast via the A20 and A4. Parking is a point of attention: in Binnenstad, paid parking and permit parking apply, and free spaces are scarce, especially in the evenings.

Room for improvement

I've lived here for 14 years, very special because my father was born on this street. But in recent years the neighbourhood has deteriorated. They gave it a makeover but that doesn't improve anything. More people live here and also different people at the same addresses who simply don't belong here. It's very noisy and the nuisance has increased.
