Living in Lange Elisabethstraat Mariaplaats and surroundings

This part of the city centre is the historic heart of Utrecht. Mariaplaats itself is a quiet, almost village-like square, surrounded by monumental buildings from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, with the Mariakerk ruins as a striking landmark. Lange Elisabethstraat connects this square with the busy Twijnstraat and the Oudegracht. Here you live among canal houses, former monastery complexes and townhouses that have been divided into apartments. You will hardly find any new-build here; the housing supply consists almost entirely of existing buildings, often with characteristic features such as high ceilings and wooden beams, but also with the associated limitations: steep stairs, no lift, and sometimes limited insulation.

Facilities around Mariaplaats

You can do your daily shopping at the Albert Heijn on Twijnstraat or Mariaplaats, or at the Jumbo on Lange Viestraat, a five-minute walk away. On Twijnstraat and Zadelstraat you will find specialist shops, coffee bars and small restaurants. The Oudegracht with all its terraces and shops is literally around the corner. For education, there are primary schools such as Paulusschool (Kromme Nieuwegracht) and Domschool in the area. GP practices and pharmacies are scattered throughout the city centre. Sports facilities are scarcer: there is no sports park in the neighbourhood, but swimming pool De Krommerijn is within cycling distance. Green space is a weak point. Mariaplaats itself has some trees, and Lepelenburgpark along the canal is the nearest park, but residents give green space a meagre score of 4.5.

Accessibility and parking

Accessibility scores an 8.0 from residents, and that is accurate. Utrecht Central Station is a ten-minute walk away. Bus routes stop at Nobelstraat and along the canals. By bike, you can be anywhere in the centre in a few minutes and at Science Park or Uithof within a quarter of an hour. By car, it is a different story: the city centre is largely traffic-calmed, parking is expensive (permit or paid, up to €5.10 per hour) and spaces are scarce. The A2 and A12 are reachable via the canals and Catharijnesingel in ten to fifteen minutes, but during rush hour that can increase significantly.

Residents rate the neighbourhood an average of 7.3. Housing scores high (9.0), which is probably due to the characteristic homes. Beauty gets an 8.5, and community also scores well at 8.5. Safety scores lower at 6.0, which fits the picture of a lively city centre where nightlife crowds also roam at night. One resident writes: "Beautiful historic surroundings, nice to live in, but in the evenings it can be restless around the Oudegracht." You can read more experiences on the neighbourhood page with reviews and neighbourhood data of Lange Elisabethstraat Mariaplaats and surroundings.

Compared to nearby neighbourhoods, this area is quieter than Domplein Neude Janskerkhof, where nightlife is more present. Springweg and Geertebuurt has a similar intimate character but slightly more of a neighbourhood feel. If you are looking for a rental home with more space and a lower price tag, you could also look at Breedstraat and Plompetorengracht and surroundings.

Who is a rental property around Mariaplaats interesting for?

With 960 residents between the ages of 25 and 45 and 900 single-person households, this is par excellence a neighbourhood for working singles and young professionals. The high labour participation rate (76%) and the large share of highly educated people (65%) confirm that picture. Renting an apartment in Lange Elisabethstraat Mariaplaats and surroundings is especially attractive if you value central living and historic atmosphere, and are willing to pay for it. For families with children, the neighbourhood is less obvious: little green space, narrow streets and limited play space. Be prepared: rental properties in Lange Elisabethstraat Mariaplaats and surroundings go quickly. Have your documents (employer's statement, pay slips, ID) ready in advance. Also consider owner-occupied homes in this neighbourhood as an alternative, although the entry level with a WOZ of €582,000 is not cheap.

Local, nice, but busy

It's a nice area to live in. The location is pleasant, but it's the centre so there's almost always noise pollution. Of course that's to be expected. However, the surroundings aren't very hygienic. In the courtyard where we live, there are many restaurants that dump their waste in the alleys. That's a shame.
