Living in Nieuwe Markt and surroundings, Gouda

Nieuwe Markt and surroundings is one of the most urban neighbourhoods in Gouda. You live here literally in the middle of the old city centre, within walking distance of the Markt, the Kaasmarkt and the canals that make Gouda so recognisable. The buildings largely consist of older canal houses, narrow townhouses and smaller apartments above shops or catering establishments. New construction is scarce here; it mainly concerns historical heritage that has been inhabited for centuries. This gives the neighbourhood character, but also means that homes are sometimes smaller or less well insulated than in newer districts.

The population is young and predominantly single: the largest group of residents is between 25 and 45 years old (over 600 of the 1,490 inhabitants), and no fewer than 625 households are single-person households. Only 23% of residents are married. This is clearly a neighbourhood for singles, starters and young professionals, not so much for families with children.

Facilities in Nieuwe Markt and surroundings

The location in the middle of the Gouda city centre means you have almost everything within walking distance. On the Nieuwe Markt itself and in the immediate vicinity you will find daily groceries, catering and shops. The Jumbo and Albert Heijn on the edge of the centre are within a few minutes' walk. For a wider range of shops, walk to the Kleiweg or the centre. Primary schools are available in the city centre and directly adjacent neighbourhoods; secondary schools such as the Coenecoop College and the Driestar are within cycling distance. Green space is scarce in this neighbourhood; residents therefore give green space a low score of 3.0 out of 10. Those in need of a park or play area should head towards Nieuwe Park Oost or Nieuwe Park West. Sports facilities are available in the city, but not just around the corner.

Accessibility of Nieuwe Markt and surroundings

Gouda station is about a ten-minute walk from the neighbourhood and offers direct connections to Utrecht, The Hague, Rotterdam and Amsterdam. By bike you are there in less than five minutes. Several bus routes run through or along the city centre. By car, the A12 (towards Utrecht and The Hague) is quickly accessible via the ring roads. Parking in the city centre is however a point of attention: you need a permit and free spaces are scarce, especially at weekends. Those who travel by car daily should take this into account. Accessibility scores highly with residents: an 8.0 out of 10, which is logical given the central location and excellent public transport connections.

Atmosphere and what residents think

The neighbourhood scores an average of 5.7 out of 10 based on resident reviews, with notable outliers. Accessibility (8.0) and housing (7.0) score well, while community (5.0), beauty (4.0) and green space (3.0) lag behind. Resident Caitlyn describes it aptly: "Living in the city is fun, but I don't need to walk alone on the street in the evening." She indicates that neighbours rarely make themselves heard and that the neighbourhood is pleasant during the day, but that there are sometimes uncomfortable situations in the evening. That is an honest picture of a lively city neighbourhood: lots of dynamism and freedom, but less social cohesion and feeling of safety than in a quieter residential area. View all experiences on the neighbourhood page of Nieuwe Markt and surroundings, including all sub-scores and resident reviews.

Those who want to compare the neighbourhood with other parts of the city centre: Turfmarkt and surroundings and Raam and surroundings are directly adjacent and have a similar urban character. Those looking for more green space should look instead at Nieuwe Park Oost or Nieuwe Park West, which are quieter and offer more outdoor space.

Does renting in Nieuwe Markt and surroundings suit you?

This neighbourhood is best suited to singles and young professionals who consciously choose city life: close to everything, no car needed, and always something to do in the area. Families with young children will likely experience the limited green space and the bustle as disadvantages. Those considering renting a home in Nieuwe Markt and surroundings would do well to respond quickly to listings: the number of available rental homes is limited and the neighbourhood attracts a fixed target group. Prepare documents such as payslips and an employer's statement in advance. For social rent, register with Woonpartners Midden-Holland via gouda.nl; allow for waiting lists. Living in the city is fun, but I don't need to walk the streets alone at night.

So far, the people who live here are quite to themselves; I don't hear much from the neighbours or hardly see them. During the day it's nice in the city, and despite the noise sometimes, I find sleeping easy too. In the evening, I find the neighbourhood a bit scary to walk through, sometimes some odd characters and there are some deals I've seen, but I don't get involved, I just live safely so far! Green in the city is almost nowhere to be seen, maybe more maintenance for plants or trees?
