Living in Turfmarkt en omgeving, Gouda

Turfmarkt en omgeving is located in the heart of Gouda's city centre, directly on the historic canal the Turfsingel and within walking distance of the Markt with its famous town hall. The neighbourhood has a distinctly historic character: canal houses, narrow streets and 17th- and 18th-century buildings alternate. Most rental homes are apartments in older buildings, sometimes with high ceilings and authentic details, but rarely with a private garden or spacious storage. Anyone considering renting an apartment in Turfmarkt en omgeving must take this urban character into account: this is not a quiet residential area, but a lively neighbourhood in the middle of the city.

Facilities

The location is one of its strongest assets. Supermarkets such as Albert Heijn on Kleiweg and Jumbo in the city centre are within walking distance. Shops, restaurants, cafés and the weekly market on the Markt (Thursday and Saturday) are literally around the corner. For daily errands, you hardly need to leave the neighbourhood. Schools in the immediate vicinity are available for primary education; secondary schools and the Coenecoop College are within cycling distance. Sports facilities are less directly present in the neighbourhood itself, but Goudse Hout, a large recreational area with water and greenery, is a short bike ride away. Residents also mention the presence of greenery as a positive point, striking for an inner-city neighbourhood.

Accessibility

Gouda station is about five minutes away by bike, providing direct connections to Utrecht, The Hague, Rotterdam and Alphen aan den Rijn. Several bus routes run through or past the city centre. By car, the A12 is easily accessible via the N207, although parking in the neighbourhood itself is a point of attention: the centre of Gouda is largely a paid parking area and permit holders depend on available permit zones. Cycling is the most logical choice for daily travel in this neighbourhood. The accessibility score from residents is therefore a perfect 10.0.

Atmosphere and experience

The neighbourhood attracts relatively many residents in the 45 to 65 age group (the largest group), but also young adults between 25 and 45 live here. Single-person households are the most common. That fits the urban character: it is not a typical family neighbourhood, but a neighbourhood for people who want to live centrally and appreciate the liveliness of the city centre. The downside is that this liveliness also brings bustle and sometimes nuisance. One resident describes it as follows: "My living place is ideal, I enjoy it and we live centrally. It is a cosy neighbourhood with supermarkets within walking distance, the station 5 minutes away by bike and there is a lot of greenery. However, my downstairs neighbour is fierce and unfriendly, people don't help each other quickly." That honesty is typical: the neighbourhood scores high on accessibility and facilities, but lower on sense of community (5.0) and safety (5.0). The same resident indicates that the neighbourhood sometimes feels less safe for women, especially in the evening hours. For all resident experiences, visit the neighbourhood page of Turfmarkt en omgeving with full scores and reviews.

If you compare this neighbourhood with neighbouring areas, Nieuwe Markt en omgeving has a similar central character but a slightly different mix of hospitality and shops. Raam en omgeving is slightly quieter and could be an alternative for those who find the bustle of Turfmarkt a bit much. Those looking for more space and greenery might also consider Nieuwe Park Oost, which offers a greener setting on the edge of the city centre.

This neighbourhood is best suited for singles and couples who want to live centrally, do not need a car and are willing to pay a higher rent for location and appearance. Families looking for space and quiet will be less likely to find their ideal rental home here: the supply is limited, the homes are often compact and the surroundings are busy. Respond quickly when something becomes available, make sure you have income documents and references at hand, and expect a rent that in most cases exceeds €1,200 per month. For social housing, you can register with Woonpartners Midden-Holland, but waiting lists are long and the housing association stock in this neighbourhood is small (5%). Beautiful and central, but busy and riskier for women to live.

My living place is ideal, I enjoy it and we live centrally. It's a cosy neighbourhood with supermarkets within walking distance, the station a 5-minute bike ride away, and there's plenty of greenery. (Even in the city centre) However, my downstairs neighbour is fierce and unfriendly, people don't quickly help each other, and it's scary to walk the streets at night as a woman.
