Renting in Steyl: a small private sector with firm prices

Of the more than 1,715 homes in Steyl, 39% are rental properties. The majority of these are owned by a housing association (32%), meaning the private sector is limited. If you are looking for a rental home in Steyl outside the social housing sector, you paid an average of €1,455 per month over the past year for a home averaging 119 m². The range in the private sector was between €1,220 and €1,550 per month. These are annual averages over the past 12 months, excluding social housing and rooms. For the current situation, you can consult the overview at the top of this page. The WOZ value in Steyl, at €282,000, is slightly below the municipal average of Venlo (€285,000), which fits the village character of the neighbourhood. The average income of €34,300 is slightly above the Venlo average of €32,600. The combination of few private-sector homes and a relatively high price level means renting in Steyl is not automatically cheap.

Steyl on the Meuse: village-like, cosy, but not always quiet

Steyl is a village literally on the Meuse, with a strong character of its own that you won't find in most Venlo neighbourhoods. The monastery, the Meuse quay, the narrow streets and the greenery along the water give Steyl an atmosphere that residents clearly appreciate. On the Steyl neighbourhood page, residents give the village a 7.5 based on reviews, with notably high scores for safety (8.5), accessibility (8.5) and sense of community (8.5). Resident Nicky describes it as "cosy" and points to the mini-parks, the proximity of the Meuse and the available supermarkets. Nicky does not personally experience the limited bus accessibility as a problem, but it is something to consider if you live without a car.

Yet the picture is not without its caveats. Ineke gives a 7.6 and writes that the surroundings are beautiful, but that everything and everyone lives close together. "Rarely a moment of peace and quiet," says Ineke, who also notes that more and more residents are moving in. This translates into a lively, sometimes noisy atmosphere, which can work well for families with children, but is less obvious for those seeking peace and quiet. Amenities score the lowest of all categories at 5.0, which fits the village character: for extensive shopping or a wide range of services, you have to rely on the rest of Venlo. The neighbourhoods Kloosterdorp and Nieuw-Steyl are part of Steyl and each have a slightly different streetscape, with Kloosterdorp having the most historic character.

The largest age group in Steyl is 45 to 65 years (1,180 residents), followed by those aged 65 and over (910). You notice this in the neighbourhood: it is not a young, dynamic area, but a place where people have lived for years and know each other. The sense of community that residents mention is directly related to this. For those seeking that familiar, village-like togetherness, Steyl is a logical choice.

Renting in Steyl: who is this village suitable for, and who is it not?

Steyl mainly attracts families, the elderly and people who consciously choose a village environment close to the Meuse. Renting in Steyl in the private sector is on the high side for the region, so the village is less accessible for starters with a limited budget. Also, those who depend on public transport or need many urban amenities would be better off looking at Venlo-Centrum or Venlo-Oost-Noord. If you are not necessarily looking for a rental property, also check out the supply of homes for sale in Steyl, because with 61% owner-occupied homes, that is by far the dominant segment in the neighbourhood.

Finding rental properties in Steyl: how to go about it

The supply of rental properties in Steyl is limited, especially in the private sector. Nice village but too many residents

Friendly with each other. Noisy. Beautiful surroundings, but everything and everyone lives close together. Rarely a moment of peace and quiet. There are many children in the neighbourhood, they throw their rubbish on the street. So far I have always felt safe in our neighbourhood, but more and more residents or people from outside are coming. That gives a more unsafe feeling. Steyl has few amenities. There is only a supermarket. If you need other items, you will have to look for them in another place. Fortunately, we have greenery here and there, but that does mean there is more noise nuisance. The maintenance of the greenery is all done electrically, with most machines causing a huge racket. The people working with them wear ear/hearing protectors themselves.

cosy

I think it's cosy and I think there is enough space to expand. There aren't many bus games, but personally I don't mind that. There are also supermarkets and mini parks everywhere, and it's close to the Maas.
