Living in Afrika, Purmerend

Afrika is part of the Weidevenne district, a relatively young expansion area on the western side of Purmerend, largely built from the 1990s onwards. You can see this in the homes: spacious plots, wide streets, plenty of greenery in public spaces, and a well-thought-out urban design. Within this, Afrika has a quiet, residential character. It is not a neighbourhood where you expect much street life in the evening, but for most residents here, that is exactly the intention.

The housing types are varied. You will find terraced houses, semi-detached houses, and detached homes, built in a period ranging from the late 1990s to the early 2000s. The architecture is functional and modern for its time, with ample parking and usually a garden. Apartments are also available but form a smaller category within the supply.

In terms of amenities, Afrika scores strongly. Within the Weidevenne district, there are several primary schools, including schools within walking distance of most streets in Afrika. Resident Noa describes this aptly: "Many schools in the neighbourhood, so plenty of choice." For daily shopping, there is the Weidevenne shopping centre, with a supermarket and various shops within cycling distance. Those wanting more choice are quickly in Purmerend city centre, with the Eggert shopping centre and the inner city.

Accessibility is one of the neighbourhood's strongest points, with a score of 9.0 in resident ratings. Noa also explicitly mentions public transport options: "There are also many public transport options." Purmerend has its own train station on the Zaan line, from which you can reach Amsterdam Central in about twenty minutes. From Afrika, you can quickly cycle or take the bus to that station. The neighbourhood is also well accessible by car via the N244 towards Amsterdam and Hoorn. Cyclists benefit from the flat polder landscape and the well-constructed cycle paths in Weidevenne.

Green space is present in the form of parks and water features characteristic of the polder district. The neighbourhood borders open meadowland, which enhances the sense of space. The green score stands at 8.0. Compared to sister neighbourhoods such as Europa and Amerika, which also lie within Weidevenne, Afrika has a similar character. Hazepolder is somewhat more compact and has a slightly different housing supply. More neighbourhood information, resident reviews, and district data can be found on the main neighbourhood page for Afrika.

Does a home in Afrika suit you as a buyer?

Afrika is most suitable for families and home-movers who combine space, tranquillity, and good amenities. The largest age group is 45 to 65 years, but young families are also well represented. First-time buyers will find that the average purchase price of over €510,000 makes entry difficult, especially in the current market climate. Good experience

I think it's a very nice neighbourhood to live in. We ourselves don't have much contact with all the neighbours, so I can't say whether our area is good in that regard, but that of course also depends on the residents themselves. There are many schools nearby, so plenty of choice. There are also many public transport options, so you are well connected to other cities, which is nice for students like me. Public transport here is not flawless, but certainly not bad either. There is a meadow nearby and almost everywhere in Purmerend you have a canal with a cycling/walking path, which are nice places to walk dogs. A large part of the Afrika neighbourhood is connected by water, so you can also go boating and swimming. The neighbourhoods often look well-maintained. You usually find a can or a piece of paper here and there, but I think that's the case everywhere. As for facilities: there is a cinema, hospital, bowling alley, swimming pool, several parks and playgrounds. Supermarkets are abundant: Lidl, Dirk, Spar, several Vomar and Albert Heijn stores. There are also plenty of cafes and restaurants. In the centre, which is a 15-minute bike ride away, you also have shops like H&M, Only, Douglas, Ici Paris XL. There is also Weidevenne shopping centre, which is even closer, where you can find everything for your groceries. There is a market there every Thursday and in the centre every Tuesday.
