Living in De Meenten: a quiet neighbourhood with a strong sense of community

De Meenten is one of the older neighbourhoods of Almere Haven and therefore has something that new-build neighbourhoods often lack: a recognisable character. The neighbourhood is divided into areas such as Schapenmeent and Terpmeent and Rietmeent and Dijkmeent, each with its own streets, greenery and atmosphere. Resident Benthe, who has lived in Schapenmeent her whole life, describes it aptly: people greet each other on the street, you leave your door open and nothing happens. That social safety is no coincidence, but the result of a stable neighbourhood with many long-term residents. On Buurtje.nl, the neighbourhood scores 7.9 out of 10, with a notably high safety score of 9.0. Accessibility, community, housing and beauty all score 8.0. Greenery and amenities come in slightly lower at 7.0, which is honestly accurate: the neighbourhood is green but not lush, and for a wide range of shops you rely on the centre of Almere Haven within walking distance.

In terms of daily amenities, De Meenten is reasonably self-sufficient. There are primary schools in and around the neighbourhood, and for secondary education there are good connections to Almere Haven and Almere Stad. Supermarkets are accessible via the Haven shopping centre, which is within cycling distance. For sports, there are opportunities in the nearby parks and along the banks of the Weerwater and the Lage Vaart. The neighbourhood itself is laid out green with wide streets and public gardens, contributing to the quiet atmosphere. Those looking for more urban entertainment will find it in the centre of Almere or in Centrum Almere Haven, a short distance away.

Accessibility is a strong point of the neighbourhood. Almere Haven station is within cycling distance and offers direct connections to Amsterdam Central in about 25 minutes. By car, the A6 is quickly accessible, also making Lelystad and Utrecht easily reachable. Bus services connect De Meenten with the rest of Almere. Those who want to compare with other living environments in the city can also look at neighbourhoods such as De Hoven or De Werven. More information about the neighbourhood, all resident experiences and neighbourhood statistics can be found on the neighbourhood page of De Meenten. The municipality also publishes up-to-date information about amenities and policy on almere.nl.

For whom is a home for sale in De Meenten a good choice?

De Meenten mainly attracts movers, seniors and buyers who value peace and social cohesion over urban liveliness. The large group of over-65s in the neighbourhood reflects that. For starters, buying in De Meenten is feasible at the lower end of the market (from around €290,000), but keep in mind additional costs such as transfer tax (2%) and notary fees. The supply is limited: with 24 transactions in a year, the market is not large, which means you have to act quickly when something becomes available. Those who want more flexibility can also look at the rental homes in De Meenten as an alternative.

My neighbourhood

I have a very good experience with this neighbourhood. I have lived in the Schapenmeent my whole life and find it a very pleasant place to live. (Almost) everyone is friendly here and greets each other when they walk by. It is also a very safe environment. For example, if you leave your door open, no one will step inside; some people even close the door for you or knock/ring the bell to let you know. In other words, we look out for each other and help when needed. Of course, there are a few bad apples, but you always have that unfortunately. So, Schapenmeent is a very nice, quiet, and safe place.
