Beek: a quiet, older neighbourhood with mixed reviews

Beek is a residential area with a mix of ages: nearly half the homes were built between 1945 and 1970, and a quarter before 1945. The population is older, with a third aged 65 or over, and most households are couples without children. One resident describes the neighbourhood as a 'beautiful neighbourhood' but notes that recent renovations have reduced community spirit: 'the galleries are a good 25 cm narrower, so sitting outside is no longer an option.' They also mention vandalism and illegal activities among bored youth. The neighbourhood Beek has a moderate urban density, with shops and schools within walking distance.

Daily life: supermarkets and schools nearby

For groceries, you have a PLUS supermarket just around the corner and a Jumbo a five-minute walk away. Primary schools are a couple of streets away: Basisschool Reuzepas is about a ten-minute walk, and KC Eigen Wijs is a bit further. Secondary schools are a bit farther, with Groenewald and Graaf Huyn College both around 2.4 km. The municipality Beek offers a train station 1.7 km away, a restaurant 500 m away, and a park 800 m away.

Although the homes have been renovated, not to full satisfaction. It has also caused the sense of community and contact with neighbours to disappear. Previously, you could sit comfortably on the gallery on nice days, but due to the renovation, the galleries are a good 25 cm narrower, so sitting outside is no longer an option. There is a balcony at the rear, but with warmer temperatures it is unbearable there. Some activities are organised, but residents are no longer interested because vandalism has regularly occurred. The older youth are bored and that leaves traces. There are also frequent illegal activities. A real shame for a beautiful neighbourhood.
