Living in Buiksloterham-Zuid, Amsterdam

Buiksloterham-Zuid is one of the youngest neighbourhoods in Amsterdam-Noord. Until about ten years ago, this was an industrial area, and you can still see the rough edges: construction cranes are dotted around, and some plots have only just been completed or are still under construction. The homes are almost all new-build, with energy-efficient apartments and a handful of single-family homes. The extremely low average gas consumption of 50 m³ per home confirms this: these are modern, well-insulated houses. The atmosphere is that of a neighbourhood still finding its identity, with a mix of young families, couples and singles. The largest group of residents is between 25 and 45 years old (940 out of 1,725 inhabitants), and 62% are highly educated.

Resident John de Weij puts it aptly: "I've been living in Hetty Blokstraat for 2 years now and think it's a great neighbourhood, with nice people and beautiful energy-efficient homes." That sense of community is striking for such a young district. Residents give the 'community' category a 9.5 out of 10. This is because many residents moved in at the same time and are shaping the neighbourhood together, from neighbourhood drinks to joint initiatives.

Facilities in and around Buiksloterham-Zuid

For daily groceries, you're not right around the corner from a large supermarket. The nearest Albert Heijn and Lidl are on Klaprozenweg or towards Mosplein, about a 10-minute bike ride. Smaller shops and eateries have appeared in the neighbourhood itself, such as cafés and restaurants along Johan van Hasseltweg. For schools, there are primary schools in the immediate vicinity (residents give education an 8.0), and at nearby Overhoeks there are also educational facilities. For sports, you can go to the nearby Noorderparkbad swimming pool in Noorderpark, and there are various gyms in the area. Noorderpark itself is the nearest large green space, as greenery in the neighbourhood itself is still limited. Residents therefore give the green score a 6.5.

Accessibility: ferries, buses and the bicycle

This is honestly the weakest point of Buiksloterham-Zuid. Public transport is not yet optimal, something resident John also mentions: "The public transport connections are unfortunately not great, but since this is a new neighbourhood, I think that will change." The nearest bus stops are on Klaprozenweg (bus lines 35 and 38), and Noord metro station is about a 15-minute bike ride away. The free GVB ferry to Amsterdam Central Station is an alternative, but it departs from NDSM wharf or the Buiksloterham ferry, which is also a bit of a bike ride. By bike, you can reach the city centre in a quarter of an hour via the ferries. By car, the A10 is easily accessible via Klaprozenweg. Parking is permit-based in parts of the neighbourhood; check with the municipality of Amsterdam for current parking rates and regulations.

Compared to neighbouring neighbourhood Buiksloterham-Noord, the character is similar: both new-build, both under development. Those looking for more buzz can check out the NDSM-terrein, which has a completely different vibe with its creative breeding grounds and festivals. For more established neighbourhoods with better facilities, Klaprozenbuurt is an option. More reviews and neighbourhood data can be found on the Buiksloterham-Zuid neighbourhood page.

Nice neighbourhood with nice people

I've been living on Hetty Blokstraat for 2 years now. And I think it's a great neighbourhood. With nice people and beautiful energy-efficient houses. The public transport connections are unfortunately not great. But since this is a new district, I think that will change. I think it's a super nice neighbourhood and I don't think I'll ever leave this neighbourhood.
