Living in Kleinpolder, Rotterdam

Kleinpolder is a post-war residential neighbourhood in the northwest of Rotterdam, part of the Overschie district. The neighbourhood has a predominantly functional character: porch flats and stacked homes from the 1960s and 1970s alternate with terraced houses. It is not a neighbourhood that stands out for architectural features, but it is one where people stay for years. That says something about the peace and affordability that Kleinpolder offers.

The average income is €33,000 per year, slightly below the Rotterdam average of €35,900. The labour participation rate is 58%. The largest age group is 25 to 45 years (over 2,300 residents), but those aged 65 and over are also well represented with over 1,500 residents. Single-person households are the largest household type at 1,845, followed by married couples (30%). This makes Kleinpolder a varied neighbourhood in terms of resident profile.

Facilities in Kleinpolder

The neighbourhood borders Overschie centre, where you can go for more shops, a GP and a pharmacy. That is a strong signal for families looking for a rental home in a neighbourhood with good school options. For sports and green spaces, the offering is more limited; residents give green spaces a 6.5. The Schiekanaal and the polder areas on the outskirts offer some green space, but a large city park is not immediately around the corner.

Could be better

I've lived here for 14 years and I'll stay here with my daughter. Here in Overschie there's quite a lot to do and shops are within walking distance. Public transport is central here in Overschie for young and old. I don't have real contact with neighbours because I work and sometimes we cross paths. In our block we are there for each other if needed. A downside is that often at night cars are in the street with young people, which can be very annoying. For example... laughing gas, loud music, alcohol and drugs!! But to be honest, we enjoy it here..!!

Plus points: everyone in the neighbourhood often chats with each other, which keeps the bond with the neighbours fun and cosy. Downside: it's a shame that not much is organised for the young people in the neighbourhood.
