House prices and market figures Glimmen Dorp, Groningen

Glimmen Dorp is a pronounced owner-occupied neighbourhood: as much as 80% of the 463 homes are owned, while only 20% are rented. This translates into a market that is clearly different from the average in the municipality of Groningen. The average WOZ value is €537,000, well above the municipal average of €295,000 and slightly below the district average of Glimmen-Onnen-Noordlaren of €561,000. That difference with the district is small, but it indicates that the neighbourhood is well in line with the surrounding villages.

In the past twelve months, eight homes changed hands, with an average purchase price of €1,023,500. The range ran from €550,000 to €1,650,000, which illustrates the diversity in supply well. With an average living area of 251 m², this works out to a price of approximately €4,077 per square metre. The supply consists almost exclusively of spacious detached houses and large semi-detached houses; buying apartments in Glimmen Dorp is virtually not an option. For current asking prices and the current supply, you can consult the overview at the top of this page.

Living in Glimmen Dorp, Groningen

Glimmen Dorp is a small, quiet village on the southern side of the municipality of Groningen, nestled between the Hondsrug and the Drenthe landscape. It has no urban allure, and that is precisely the intention. The atmosphere is village-like and green, the buildings are open, and the gardens are large. Those who live here have consciously chosen space and tranquillity over urban proximity.

The housing stock consists largely of detached houses and semi-detached houses, many built in the seventies and eighties, but also with newer buildings scattered throughout the village. The plots are spacious, the streets are quiet, and you quickly drive into the countryside. The Hoornsemeer and the Hondsrug forests are within cycling distance, which explains why residents give green spaces the highest score: a 9.5.

Facilities in the village itself are limited. There is no supermarket in Glimmen itself; for that you drive to Haren or the city. Primary school De Klimop in Glimmen provides education for the youngest children; for secondary education, children are dependent on Haren or Groningen. Residents give education a 9.0, which presumably also reflects the broader region. Facilities score the lowest of all sub-scores with a 4.0, and that is honest: if you want to walk for daily groceries or quickly grab a terrace seat, you have to get in the car.

Accessibility scores remarkably high with a 9.0. Glimmen is located directly on the A28, so you drive to the Groningen ring road in less than a quarter of an hour. Glimmen train station, on the Groningen-Assen line, provides a direct connection to the centre of Groningen in about ten to fifteen minutes. For people who work in Groningen or Assen and want to live outside the city, that combination of motorway and train is a serious advantage.

On the neighbourhood page of Glimmen Dorp you will find all resident reviews and neighbourhood data. Residents give the neighbourhood an overall score of 7.9 out of 10. Safety scores a 9.5, which is in line with what you would expect in a small, close-knit community. One resident writes: "It is quiet, safe and green here. You know your neighbours and that brings peace." Community spirit scores a 7.0, which indicates that the village is not overly socially active, but also not anonymous.

Compared to neighbouring communities such as Noordlaren Dorp and Onnen Dorp, Glimmen Dorp has a slightly better train connection, but a similar level of facilities. Those looking for more space outside the village centre can also look at the Buitengebied Glimmen, where the plots are even larger and the tranquillity goes even further.

Who is a home for sale in Glimmen Dorp interesting for?

Glimmen Dorp mainly attracts movers and families in the higher income bracket who consciously distance themselves from the city without losing the connection. The average income of €45,400 and the high proportion of highly educated people at 47% confirm that picture. First-time buyers and people with a limited budget are out of luck here: with an average purchase price of over a million euros, this is not a market for a first home. Supply is also limited; only a handful of homes are sold per year, so overbidding or waiting a long time is realistic. Those who want to be more flexible can also look at the rental homes in Glimmen Dorp, although that supply is equally scarce. Seniors who want to downsize will find few single-storey or smaller homes here.

What residents say about Glimmen Dorp

Based on two reviews, Glimmen Dorp gives an overall score of 7.9 out of 10. The outliers to the top are safety and green spaces, both with a 9.5. Accessibility and education follow with a 9.0 respectively. The low score for facilities of 4.0 is the honest downside of the village character. One resident describes it as: "Wonderfully quiet and green, but for everything you need you have to get in the car." That sums up the neighbourhood well.

A beautiful village nestled between two forests and two lakes.

It is my birthplace and I have experienced all the ins and outs of the village. Four years ago, the jackpot of the Postcode Lottery fell in Glimmen. For me, it was much less fun at that time because I was in hospital with serious liver problems, even at New Year's I was still there after two cardiac arrests, luckily resuscitated in time. Then such a lottery prize becomes a side issue; I had four tickets!!!?. But when you almost die, money is not an option. Now more about Glimmen: it is a water extraction area for Groningen, and our tap water comes from the little river Drentse A and groundwater that is pumped up. Glimmen is also historically important; there are stories about Bommenberend staying in a castle and besieging Groningen in the year 1700 or 1800. In Glimmen, there is still a castle in the Drentse A area. Best regards, Jan Jager

Green, rural yet close to all amenities!

Glimmen is a leafy village with lots of nature and forest. Many detached houses and a wide choice of associations and clubs. The location is also ideal relative to motorways and Groningen. Haren is a cosy village with a wide variety of shops. Especially in summer some nuisance from air traffic, but not too dominant.
