House prices in Glimmen-Onnen-Noordlaren: well above the Groningen average

Glimmen-Onnen-Noordlaren is one of the most expensive residential areas within the municipality of Groningen. The average WOZ value is €561,000, while the municipal average is €295,000. That difference says a lot about the character of this area: detached houses on spacious plots, rurally located in the Hondsrug region, define the picture here. Buying apartments in Glimmen-Onnen-Noordlaren is hardly an option. Over the past twelve months, 22 homes were sold with an average purchase price of €975,386. The range runs from €399,000 to €2,250,000, indicating how diverse the supply is. For current asking prices and the number of available homes, see the overview at the top of this page. The homeownership rate is remarkably high: 83% of the housing stock is owner-occupied, compared to just 17% rental.

Living in Glimmen-Onnen-Noordlaren: forest edge, tranquillity and a highly educated neighbourhood community

Those considering living in Glimmen-Onnen-Noordlaren consciously choose peace, space and nature. The three villages are nestled between the Noordlaarderbos, the Zuidlaardermeer and the Appelbergen, and that is exactly what residents appreciate most. On the neighbourhood page of Glimmen-Onnen-Noordlaren, residents rate the greenery a 9.0 out of 10, the highest sub-score. The overall resident rating stands at 7.9 out of 10. Residents describe the area as quiet and safe, with a safety score of 8.7. One reviewer writes that you can still take a stroll here in the evening without worry, something that feels different in the city.

The downside is the amenities score: with a 5.3, that is the weakest link. There is no supermarket within walking distance in the village centres themselves. Groceries are done in Haren or in the city of Groningen. Primary education is available nearby; residents give education an 8.3, but for secondary education, children depend on surrounding places. Sports clubs such as football and tennis are present in the villages, and the nature offers ample opportunities for walking, cycling and horse riding. Those seeking more urban amenities sometimes compare this area with neighbourhoods like Oud-Zuid or the Oosterparkwijk, but that is a fundamentally different living environment.

In terms of accessibility, the neighbourhood scores an 8.7. Glimmen station is on the sprinter connection between Groningen and Assen, with a travel time of about ten minutes to Groningen Central. By car, the A28 is quickly accessible via the exit at Haren. Bus connections exist, but are less frequent than in the city. The sub-villages each have their own character: Glimmen Dorp lies directly by the railway, Noordlaren Dorp is quieter and more compact, and Onnen Dorp borders the lake. The Noordlaarderbos and Zuidlaardermeer area also offer their own living atmospheres worth exploring. The population is relatively older and highly educated: 52% have a high level of education and the average income is €45,600, well above the municipal average of €33,100.

A beautiful village nestled between two forests and two lakes.

It is my birthplace and I have experienced all the ins and outs of the village. Four years ago, the jackpot of the Postcode Lottery fell in Glimmen. For me, it was much less fun at that time because I was in hospital with serious liver problems, even at New Year's I was still there after two cardiac arrests, luckily resuscitated in time. Then such a lottery prize becomes a side issue; I had four tickets!!!?. But when you almost die, money is not an option. Now more about Glimmen: it is a water extraction area for Groningen, and our tap water comes from the little river Drentse A and groundwater that is pumped up. Glimmen is also historically important; there are stories about Bommenberend staying in a castle and besieging Groningen in the year 1700 or 1800. In Glimmen, there is still a castle in the Drentse A area. Best regards, Jan Jager

Friendly

A lot is organised by various associations, from music to all kinds of activities and festivities. There is an ice rink (in summer a large football field), playground, basketball court and a mini library. We have a community centre with a village pub. We still have an old-fashioned village newspaper with information for and about the villagers. Walk each other's dog? No problem! Feed the cats during the holidays? Check! Neighbourhood drinks next week? Cosy! Walking or cycling, you are in the middle of nature in no time (the Onner polder or the forest). It's lovely living in a quiet village, but there is also plenty to do. I've been living here for 7 years now and I'm sure many more years will follow. Points for improvement? Finding a house here is not easy. Few houses are for sale and those that are for sale are pricey, very difficult for starters/young families. Previously, the bus ran all day to/through Onnen, now only in the morning and afternoon. A pity.

Green, rural yet close to all amenities!

Glimmen is a leafy village with lots of nature and forest. Many detached houses and a wide choice of associations and clubs. The location is also ideal relative to motorways and Groningen. Haren is a cosy village with a wide variety of shops. Especially in summer some nuisance from air traffic, but not too dominant.
