Living in Prins Bernhardplein and surroundings, Utrecht

The neighbourhood around Prins Bernhardplein is located in the northwestern part of Utrecht, nestled between the Vecht river and the more urban streets towards the centre. Its character is quiet and green, without feeling far from everything. The buildings mostly date from the 1950s and 1960s: terraced houses, porch flats, and a few larger apartment buildings. The streets are clear and well-laid-out, the gardens often well-maintained. It is not a neighbourhood that stands out for architectural features, but rather for a certain down-to-earth quality that many residents appreciate.

Resident Tijmen describes it aptly: "Nice neighbourhood where you're quickly in the greenery. Close to Heukelompark where you can sit nicely in the summer. Also nice that you can quickly walk out of the city and walk in the nature reserve on the other side of the Vecht." This proximity to green space is no coincidence: Heukelompark is within walking distance, and via the Vecht you quickly reach the green recreational areas north of the city. This also explains the perfect score of 10 for green space in resident reviews.

For daily shopping, you can go to supermarkets along the Amsterdamsestraatweg, the main shopping street that borders the neighbourhood to the east. That street also offers bakeries, butchers, and smaller specialist shops. Primary schools are available in the immediate vicinity, which also makes the neighbourhood attractive for families, although the largest population group is 25-45 year olds. Sports clubs and recreational facilities are accessible via Máximapark and the Vecht banks.

Accessibility scores highly: residents give a 9.0. This is not without reason. Via the Amsterdamsestraatweg you can drive into the centre in a few minutes, and several bus lines connect the neighbourhood with Utrecht Central and other parts of the city. By bike, you can reach the station square within ten minutes. For motorists, the connection to the A2 and A27 is reasonably quick via the Utrecht Ring Road. Parking is still free on most streets, although pressure is increasing.

One point of attention that Tijmen also mentions: waste is regularly dumped around the underground containers. This drags down the score for cleanliness, which comes out at 5.0 and is thus the lowest sub-score. It is not a major problem, but something to consider if tidiness is important to you. Safety and sense of community score 8.0 each, which is solid for an urban neighbourhood of this size.

Compared to neighbouring communities such as Pijlsweerd-Noord and 2e Daalsebuurt and surroundings, the Prins Bernhardplein area is somewhat quieter in character and greener in layout. Ondiep has a similar mixed profile but lies slightly further from the Vecht. Nice neighbourhood where you're straight in the greenery

Nice house on Burg Norbruislaan. Close to Heukelompark where you can sit comfortably in the summer. Also nice that you quickly walk out of the city and can walk in the nature reserve on the other side of the Vecht. Unfortunately, a lot of waste dumping around the underground containers. This causes a lot of stench and vermin. Otherwise, a nice multicultural neighbourhood where people of different faiths and backgrounds live together harmoniously.
