Pieterswijk, Leiden
NeighbourhoodThis rental room on Papengracht puts you right in the thick of Leiden's historic centre. The listing does not state a house number, floor area, year of construction or energy label. As a result, the rest of this page is mainly about the street and the neighbourhood, not the room itself. At €875 a month, the rent is well below the neighbourhood average for a room (€812), a keen price for a central spot. For more context, see other rooms in Leiden.
Pieterswijk is the student heart of Leiden, packed with associations, bars and restaurants. One resident sums it up: "It's right in the centre of Leiden, between the 3 associations. There's not only daytime bustle from tourists but also in the evening from all the students walking through the neighbourhood. Personally, I find it very cosy and not disturbing." The same resident notes that getting around by car can be tricky because of restrictions and detours, and that greenery is limited, most of it comes from residents, not the municipality. The neighbourhood has a very high population density (5,945 addresses per km²) and is dominated by single-person households. For more on the area, see the neighbourhood Pieterswijk.
For daily groceries, Ekoplaza is just around the corner, and SPAR is a couple of streets away. There are also Dirk, Hoogvliet and Jumbo within a ten-minute walk. The nearest primary school, Haanstra Basisschool, is a couple of streets away, and OBS Lucas van Leyden is a five-minute walk. The train station is a ten-minute walk, and the city's many restaurants and the Hortus botanicus are on your doorstep. For more on the wider area, see the municipality Leiden.

It's right in the centre of Leiden, between the 3 associations. There's not only daytime bustle from tourists but also in the evening from all the students walking through the neighbourhood. Personally, I find it very cosy and not disturbing. Furthermore, there are plenty of nice little restaurants and a supermarket nearby. You live close to the water and the Hortus, so there's plenty to do. Unfortunately, getting into this neighbourhood by car is a bit of a course because you're not allowed everywhere and sometimes you have to take huge detours. In my opinion, there isn't enough greenery in the neighbourhood; we do have a park, but more trees could be planted in the streets and surroundings. Most of the greenery is often from the people who live there, not from the municipality. Otherwise, I'd say the housing situation is fine. There are some association houses, owner-occupied houses, and plenty of rental properties.
