Living in Opmeer: a village with character and short lines

Those who live in Opmeer know it is a village where people know each other. Resident Kees Tempelaar, who moved to Opmeer in 2017, describes it as follows: he felt at home immediately thanks to nice neighbours and a strong sense of community. He also points out a practical advantage that not everyone immediately sees: there is only one access road for car traffic, meaning only destination traffic drives through the residential streets. This ensures wide, quiet streets with pavements and centrally placed play equipment for children. On the neighbourhood page of Opmeer you can read all resident experiences and see the full scores per category. The overall resident score stands at a strong 8.9 out of 10.

In terms of amenities, the village scores well. There is a primary school within walking distance, which immediately appeals to families with young children. For daily groceries, you don't need to leave the village: there are supermarket facilities in the core itself and in nearby Opmeer Centrum. Sports clubs are actively present, and the surrounding polder landscape offers space for walking and cycling. Resident Kick mentions that there are sufficient amenities, but that nightlife for young people is limited. That is an honest point: those looking for evening hospitality drive to Hoorn or Alkmaar for that.

Accessibility scores remarkably high in the resident assessment: a perfect 10. Opmeer is located on the N239 and has a good bus connection towards Hoorn, from where you can continue by train. By car, via the N241 and A7, you can reach Hoorn in about 25 minutes and Alkmaar in about 40 minutes. Those who want to compare in the area can also look at adjacent neighbourhoods such as Weidebloem Oost, Opmeer West or just outside the village to Spanbroek and Hoogwoud. More background on municipal housing policy and local developments can be found on the website of the municipality of Opmeer.

For whom is buying in Opmeer a good choice?

Opmeer mainly attracts families and home-movers seeking peace, space and community spirit. The largest age group is 45 to 65 years, but there are also many families with children. Starters can enter from around €175,000, although supply in that segment is limited and you must account for additional costs such as transfer tax (2% for non-starters) and notary fees. The total supply is not large: only a few dozen homes are sold per year, so acting quickly pays off. Those who want more flexibility or are still orienting themselves can also look at rental homes in Opmeer as a temporary alternative.

Cosy quiet neighbourhood

The neighbourhood is very cosy, the road is occasionally busy but usually not too crowded. Safe roads and nice people. We have enough amenities, though perhaps a bit more nightlife for young people would be good. Housing could be better, it's increasingly difficult to get a house, but investment is being made in asylum seekers, which is a shame. The houses in our neighbourhood are beautiful and large, each one unique. Building houses is difficult because you don't want to spoil the view. But something definitely needs to be done about housing on the Middelweg.

Nice neighbourhood for young and old

I moved here in 2017 and immediately felt at home. Nice neighbours and a lot of community spirit in the neighbourhood. One access road for cars in the area means only destination traffic drives here. Wide streets with pavement. And central playground equipment for the children. Primary school around the corner. Bus station in the street behind. Nice neighbourhood to live in.
