Living in Steenderen: village tranquillity with a close-knit community

Steenderen is a village you won't forget once you've been there. It is located in the municipality of Bronckhorst, in the heart of the Achterhoek, surrounded by meadows, orchards and the floodplains of the IJssel. Residents give the neighbourhood an 8.1 out of 10 on Buurtje.nl, and the sub-score for green space is even a perfect 10. That is no coincidence: the countryside literally begins at the back of the garden. Resident Kai, who has lived in the village for years, describes it aptly: everyone is incredibly friendly and sociable, at village festivals you talk to everyone and more people know you than the other way around. That sense of familiarity is exactly what many buyers are looking for here. More resident reviews and neighbourhood data can be found on the Steenderen neighbourhood page.

The amenities in the village itself are compact but functional. There is a primary school, a GP and a small centre with local shops. For a larger supermarket or more extensive shopping, most residents drive to Doetinchem or Zutphen, both about twenty minutes away. In terms of sports, the village offers football and other local clubs that keep community life active. The sub-score for amenities is 10, although this needs to be put into perspective: it concerns residents' satisfaction with what is there, not urban completeness. Accessibility scores a 6, and that is fair. Steenderen has no train station. Bus connections are limited, and those dependent on public transport notice this. By car, the A348 towards Doetinchem is quickly accessible, and via the N314 you reach Zutphen. For those who commute daily, a car is not a luxury but a necessity.

The surrounding countryside makes living in Steenderen particularly attractive for people seeking space and tranquillity. The neighbourhood Verspreide huizen Steenderen offers even more rurality for those who want to live truly outside the village. The nearby villages Baak and Olburgen are also worth exploring if you are looking in this area. Those who want to compare the region more broadly can also look at Vorden or Hummelo en Keppel, two other attractive villages within municipality Bronckhorst. More information about living and amenities in the municipality can also be found on the municipality of Bronckhorst website.

For which buyers is Steenderen a good choice?

Steenderen is primarily a village for movers and people aged 45 plus who consciously choose space, tranquillity and a close-knit community. The average sale price of nearly €675,000 makes this no starter market, although there are occasional homes under two hundred thousand. In addition to the purchase price, take into account transfer tax (2% for owner-occupation), notary costs and possible renovation costs for older properties. Supply is scarce and sometimes goes quickly, so do your research well. If you are not yet sure whether buying is the right time, you can also look at rental homes in Steenderen as an interim solution.

Cosy neighbourhood, lovely people

I've lived here for a very long time, and everyone here is incredibly kind and sociable. At the village festivals you talk to everyone, and more people know you than the other way around, and the atmosphere is so good. We live very nicely, big garden, a road where no one ever drives, but it is a walking path so sometimes people with dogs come by that we can cuddle with! If something strange is going on, the whole neighbourhood knows within half an hour. That makes me feel safe here, everyone always knows what's going on. We have enough amenities, there are many farms and livestock keepers here so we lack nothing, even though the nearest supermarket is 7 km away, I've never heard anyone complain about it. At café restaurant "den bremer" everyone gathers. Here we eat, drink, have parties, host the fair and much more. Den bremer is truly the centre of our neighbourhood.
