Lelystad does not have the best reputation, and the people who live there know it. Yet the picture residents paint on Buurtje.nl is more nuanced than the jokes. The city was built from the late 1960s onwards on the bed of the former Zuiderzee, district by district, with plenty of greenery and water in between. That layout keeps coming back in the reviews, as do a few concerns that turn up in almost every district.
A fair warning first: Lelystad has 36 reviews on Buurtje.nl in total, and between three and twelve per district. That is enough for a first impression, not for firm conclusions. A single new review can move a district up or down a place.
The pattern: greenery wins, community lags behind
On average, residents give Lelystad a 7.1 out of 10. Look at the categories and one thing stands out straight away. Greenery scores highest at 8.0, followed by safety at 7.6. Cleanliness (6.4) and community (6.5) score lowest. It is a city where people value the space, but where they complain more often about litter and about neighbours who keep to themselves.
The districts where residents are happiest
Waterwijk-Landerijen: 7.7 (5 reviews)
The best-rated district in Lelystad, with over 11,000 residents and areas such as the Rivierenbuurt and the Landerijen. Greenery (8.4) and safety (8.2) score highest. Residents call it child-friendly, with water and greenery on the doorstep, a large playground, a community centre, and schools and shops nearby. One has lived there happily for 33 years. There is also a critical voice from the Getijdenbuurt, who feels people are becoming ruder and less tolerant. There is plenty on offer: see the homes for sale and homes for rent in Waterwijk-Landerijen.
Havendiep: 7.6 (3 reviews)
Havendiep scores highest on accessibility (9.0). A resident of the Schoener spells it out: the bus runs to the station every half hour, from half past five in the morning until midnight. In the Landstrekenwijk, someone describes the area as tidy and green, "yet almost in town". The downside comes from the Grietenij, where according to one resident bikes and scooters regularly disappear since a large school campus arrived. Want to live here? Check the homes for sale in Havendiep; once in a while there is a rental too.
Kustwijk: the most talked about
Kustwijk: 7.2 (12 reviews)
No district in Lelystad has as many reviews as Kustwijk, with areas such as Karveel, Jol, Punter and Galjoen. That makes it the most reliable score in the city. Greenery (8.5) and safety (8.1) are strong, community and amenities (both 6.3) weak. Most striking: three residents from Karveel independently write almost the same thing, that it is every man for himself. In the Jol it is described as "quiet, maybe a bit too quiet", with a good night's sleep. Parents in Galjoen miss good schools nearby, especially a secondary school. There is plenty of choice: homes for sale and homes for rent in Kustwijk.
The districts below 7
Atolwijk: 6.8 (4 reviews)
Safety and housing get a 7.5, while community (5.5) and education (5.7) lag behind. The reviews themselves are friendlier than the score: children can play outside safely, nature and the animal park are close by, and the Buitenhof regularly organises activities. One household does want to leave because of problems with the power supply. See the homes for sale or homes for rent in Atolwijk.
Boswijk: 6.4 (6 reviews)
In Boswijk, experiences differ the most. Residents of the Zoom describe large houses, lots of greenery, the woods nearby and an almost village-like feel, although shops and the station are far away and the bus service is poor. Two residents of the Wold see their area going downhill, with noise, fireworks and cars racing through the streets. A tenant in the Griend complains about overdue maintenance, such as mould. Cleanliness scores lowest at 5.3, greenery highest at 7.7. Not much is for sale, but it is worth checking the homes for sale in Boswijk.
Zuiderzeewijk: 6.1 (4 reviews)
Zuiderzeewijk gets the lowest score. Cleanliness (4.3) and housing (5.0) are the main sore points: residents mention litter, bins that are not emptied and double-parked cars that sometimes block emergency services. But accessibility and amenities score a solid 7.3. Someone from Bastion mentions the shopping centre and the schools, and a resident who grew up there still finds it a great area. See the homes for sale or homes for rent in Zuiderzeewijk.
And the rest of Lelystad?
A few districts do not have enough reviews for this list yet. Bolder gets an average of 8.8 from two residents, but that is too thin to put it at the top. For Lelystad-Haven, Warande (the newest district in town) and the Stadshart we have no reviews yet. Live there? Then yours will be the first.
How we made this
We use residents' reviews on Buurtje.nl, as of 15 October 2026, and the 2025 district boundaries of Statistics Netherlands (CBS). Only districts with at least three reviews get a score. That score is the average of the eight categories residents rate, from safety and greenery to education and cleanliness.
