Living in Rustenburg: an honest picture of the neighbourhood

Rustenburg is a typical pre-war and post-war residential neighbourhood in The Hague, located between the Loosduinseweg to the north and the Zuiderpark to the south. The buildings largely consist of porch flats and maisonettes from the 1930s to the 1950s, interspersed with some newer construction. It is a densely populated neighbourhood with over 6,100 residents, the largest group (2,230 people) being between 25 and 45 years old. The atmosphere is urban and lively, with a mix of cultures and backgrounds.

In terms of amenities, Rustenburg is reasonably well-equipped. Along the Fahrenheitstraat and Dierenselaan you will find various shops, supermarkets (including an Albert Heijn and Lidl), eateries and small specialist stores. For education, the neighbourhood scores notably well: residents give it a 7.8 for education, the highest sub-score. There are several primary schools in the immediate vicinity. Zuiderpark is within walking distance and offers space for running, walking or sports, although residents note that the park does not always feel pleasant. Resident Erik Molenaar writes: "Zuiderpark is relatively close, but many young people hang around there." The sub-score for green space is therefore a modest 6.4.

Accessibility receives a 7.4 from residents, although experiences vary. Tram line 11 and several bus routes connect the neighbourhood with the centre of The Hague and Hollands Spoor station, which is about ten minutes away by tram. Resident Jayden qualifies: "Public transport is always slow and breaks down." By bike, you can reach the centre in a quarter of an hour. The Erasmusweg and Lozerlaan provide a reasonable connection to the A4 and A12 motorways.

What residents are most concerned about is safety. With a 5.8, that is the lowest sub-score. Yasmin Verbeek shares her experience: "There have been three break-ins into my husband's work van. The other two times, thousands of euros worth of tools were stolen." Erik Molenaar also notes problems: towards the Apeldoornselaan and Dierenselaan, things are "going downhill fast" according to him, and there have been several arson attacks at his flat. These are real points to consider if you are thinking of buying a home here. The overall resident rating comes to 6.8 out of 10. On the Rustenburg neighbourhood page you can read all reviews and sub-scores.

Compared to the neighbouring areas Oostbroek-Noord and Oostbroek-Zuid, Rustenburg is slightly more urban and busier. If you are looking for more peace within the same district, you could look there. Check the full district profile of the Rustenburg and Oostbroek district for a broader picture.

Does a home in Rustenburg suit you?

With an average purchase price under three hundred thousand euros and many apartments around 70 m², Rustenburg is particularly interesting for first-time buyers and singles. More than half of households are single-person (1,525 out of the total), and the average income of €30,900 is below The Hague average. If you want to buy an apartment in Rustenburg, keep in mind that many homes are in older buildings. Check the state of the homeowners' association fund and the energy label carefully, as the average gas consumption of 950 m³ indicates poor insulation. Families with children benefit from the good schools, but should weigh up the safety situation. If you are looking for more flexibility, also check the supply of rental properties in Rustenburg. And always compare with the broader supply of homes for sale in The Hague.

Nice neighbourhood

The flat I live in is nice to live in, but towards the Apeldoornselaan/Dierenselaan it is really going downhill. Next to and behind the flat, fires have been set several times, which certainly gives the older residents an unpleasant feeling. Zuiderpark is relatively close, but many young people hang out there, so people don't like to go there anymore. Towards the Leyenburg district it's fine, so the walks go that way and the shopping is done there. All in all, it's reasonably pleasant to live, although there are some points of concern due to loitering youths. Hopefully something can be done about that; cameras are not allowed due to privacy, but unfortunately that means the youths who set fires are still out of sight. The flat is cleaned by a cleaning company, but it's a shame that some residents don't take hygiene so seriously. Accessibility is good with trams 4 and 6 right outside the door. Shopping centre within walking distance, so that's fine too. So if it doesn't get any worse, it's a good place to live here.

Great concern about increasing crime and theft

We would like to contribute to improvements. Crime Our biggest concern is crime. My husband's work van has been broken into three times. Once nothing was taken, but the other two times thousands of euros worth of tools were stolen. Additionally, our cargo bike was stolen and the screen of our electric bike was taken. For a young family, this has a huge impact. Safety We live above the café/nightclub where an explosive device was placed on the windows a few weeks ago. This was a shocking event that further heightened our feelings of insecurity in the neighbourhood. Other problems in the neighbourhood We also experience a lot of nuisance from dog poop. It's almost a miracle if we or our children don't step in a pile when getting into the car. The neglected boats along the quay are also a problem. They seem to attract homeless people, and I often hear suspicious noises coming from the boats when I have to get something from the car in the evening.

fine

It's safe but quite far from the city. Public transport is always slow and breaks down. Besides, there's no nature and my neighbourhood is extremely noisy.

Cosy, lots of families

Our neighbourhood is a mix of different cultures, so far we feel very much at home here, we keep an eye on each other and we enjoy living on our street. The only downside is really the parking situation, an absolute nightmare
