The neighbourhood was built in the 1920s and 1930s as social housing, and this is reflected in the characteristic porch blocks with red and brown brickwork along streets such as Meeuwenlaan, Valkenweg and Havikslaan. The streets are wide, there are many mature trees, and the Vliegenbos is literally around the corner. It is a neighbourhood that combines green and urban in a way you don't often find in Amsterdam.

Accessibility scores highly with residents: a 9.0. And for good reason. Buikslotermeerplein with Noord metro station (North/South line) is within cycling distance, and the ferry behind the NDSM wharf and at IJplein takes you to Amsterdam Central Station in a few minutes. Bus lines 35 and 37 run through the neighbourhood towards the centre of Noord and beyond. By bike, you can reach Central Station in a quarter of an hour.

In terms of amenities, the basics are well covered. On Meeuwenlaan you will find a small Vomar supermarket and various snack bars and eateries. For larger grocery shopping, you go to the Boven 't Y shopping centre at Buikslotermeerplein. There are several primary schools in the immediate vicinity, including the Vogelbuurtschool.
