The best neighbourhoods in Eindhoven: the five districts residents rate highest

Eindhoven is really a city of five villages. Stratum, Strijp, Woensel, Gestel and Tongelre grew into the old centre, and you can still see it: many districts are called 'Oud-' (old) something and have their own core with a church, a square and a shopping street. Around them came the large post-war extensions and, on the far west side, Meerhoven.

So which are the best neighbourhoods in Eindhoven? We looked at the reviews residents leave on Buurtje.nl. One thing to know first: each district has between four and nine reviews. That is enough for a first impression, not for hard conclusions. A single enthusiastic or unhappy resident can push a district up or down a place.

1. Oud-Stratum: 8.6

Oud-Stratum comes out on top, based on 4 reviews. The district lies just south of the centre and includes the Irisbuurt, Tuindorp and the Rochusbuurt. Greenery gets a 9.5 and community a 9.0, the highest marks on the whole list.

A resident of the Irisbuurt puts it simply: you live almost in the centre, yet the area is surprisingly quiet. Someone who has lived in Tuindorp since 1994 never wants to leave and says the white houses make you feel like you are in southern Europe in summer. There is a neighbourhood watch and people look out for each other. The one recurring downside: occasional noise from motorbikes and partygoers coming from Stratumseind, the city's main bar street. There are homes for sale in Oud-Stratum right now, plus a good number of rentals.

2. Meerhoven: 8.5

With 7 reviews, Meerhoven has the best supported score in the top three. It is a young district on the western edge, with neighbourhoods such as Grasrijk, Zandrijk, Waterrijk and Bosrijk. Education scores 9.5. Residents call it spacious, clean and child-friendly, with plenty of playgrounds and parks. According to one resident you barely notice the airport next door, apart from the odd helicopter during the day.

Not everyone is quite as glowing. Someone in Waterrijk finds the houses a bit uniform, though they enjoy living by the water with helpful neighbours. An older review mentions theft and vandalism. Housing and amenities score lowest at 8.1, which is still comfortably good. If you want to live here, have a look at the homes for sale or homes for rent in Meerhoven.

3. Aanschot: 8.3

Aanschot in the north (4 reviews) is, with almost 21,000 residents, the largest district in this top five. It includes Blixembosch, Woenselse Heide and Tempel. Education gets a 9.0, safety and housing an 8.5. In Blixembosch-Oost neighbours hold street parties, run group chats and there are activities for children every Wednesday. A resident of Blixembosch-West does feel the 'our neighbourhood' spirit is weaker than it used to be. Community and amenities score a little lower as a result, at 7.8. See the homes for sale or the rentals in Aanschot.

4. Oud-Strijp: 8.0

In Oud-Strijp (5 reviews) you can still see the city's Philips history: Philipsdorp, Schoot and the former factory site Strijp-S are all part of it. Two residents have lived in the same house for more than thirty years, know everyone in their street and hold street barbecues. 'The convenience of a city with the cosiness of a village', one of them writes. Strijp-S draws a younger crowd; one resident there has trouble with youths hanging around on the roof terrace. Education (9.0) and accessibility (8.6) score highest, greenery and cleanliness (7.4) lowest. There is a notable amount of rental housing in Oud-Strijp, alongside the homes for sale.

5. Erp: 7.9

The district of Erp (9 reviews) covers Woensel-West, Kronehoef and Mensfort, just north of the centre. Accessibility scores 9.1 here: shops, buses and the city centre are close by. Residents of Kronehoef call it friendly, people say hello to each other. Woensel-West has been largely renewed in recent years. One resident sees that as progress, but also feels the new housing has cost the area some character. The weak spot is cleanliness (6.6): several people mention litter in the street. If you are looking here, check the homes for sale and homes for rent in Erp.

Every district with enough reviews

Eindhoven as a whole gets a 7.7, based on 83 reviews. These are all districts with at least three reviews.

Where things are less rosy

At the bottom are Putten (7.0) and Oud-Woensel (6.4). In Putten greenery is actually a strength (8.8); a resident of Burghplan calls the park 'our front garden' and talks about barbecues with the neighbours. At the same time several reviews mention dumped rubbish and speeding, and safety gets only a 5.6. If you still want to look: there are homes for sale in Putten.

Oud-Woensel scores well on amenities (8.0), but low on community and cleanliness (both 5.0). Residents of the Gildebuurt and Hemelrijken mention litter, vandalism and nuisance around their block of flats. There is another side too: someone in Limbeek-Zuid has lived there since 2008 and has had no problems in all those years. How this list was made

On Buurtje.nl residents rate safety, accessibility, community, greenery, housing, education, amenities and cleanliness. The district score is the average of these, across all reviews in that district. Districts with fewer than three reviews are left out. For now that includes the Centrum, Doornakkers and De Laak. We use the 2025 district boundaries of Statistics Netherlands (CBS); figures are as of October 2026.
