Living in Vestinggronden-Noord, Bergen op Zoom

Vestinggronden-Noord is located directly next to the historic city centre of Bergen op Zoom, and you can tell from the character of the neighbourhood. The buildings largely consist of terraced houses and detached houses from the first half of the twentieth century, interspersed with some more recent infills. The streets are narrow and sometimes have a one-way character, which one resident aptly described as "a lot of one-way little streets, which is a bit annoying". If you are used to spacious through streets, you need to get used to that.

At the same time, the location offers a major advantage: the historic city centre of Bergen op Zoom, with the Grote Markt and the shops around the Steenbergsestraat, is within walking distance. You can do your daily shopping nearby, and for a larger range, the city centre can be reached in a few minutes. Accessibility by car is reasonable, although the road structure requires some local knowledge. Bergen op Zoom station is about a ten to fifteen-minute bike ride away, from where direct connections run to Roosendaal, Vlissingen and Dordrecht. Bus connections to other parts of the city are available via the nearby main roads.

Green space is present in the neighbourhood, partly through the fortifications and green zones that historically belong to the old city wall. This partly explains the high green score of 8.5 given by residents. Primary schools are within a short distance, and residents rate the education provision at 8.0. The amenities score of no less than 9.0 confirms what the location already suggests: for daily and weekly needs, you hardly have to drive or cycle far.

The community score of 9.0 is remarkably high. At the same time, there is a caveat regarding safety: a recent resident gave the neighbourhood a 6.5 and wrote: "I don't feel very safe, maybe because I've been living here for three weeks and my number plates were already stolen." That is an isolated incident, but it is fair to mention it. The average safety score from residents is 7.5, which is a normal level for a city neighbourhood near the centre. You can read more experiences from residents on the neighbourhood page of Vestinggronden-Noord.

Compared to neighbouring areas such as Vestinggronden-Zuid and Het Fort, Vestinggronden-Noord has a slightly more urban and busier character due to its proximity to the city centre. The Havenkwartier offers an alternative for those who prefer water and industrial heritage. If you prefer the tranquillity of a residential area over the liveliness of the city centre, you could also look at Bergen op Zoom-West or Halsteren.

Is a home in Vestinggronden-Noord right for you?

The neighbourhood attracts a mixed audience. The largest age group is 25 to 45 years old, and with 450 single-person households, there is also a clear presence of singles and couples without children. Yet there are also families, given the share of 160 children under fifteen. For first-time buyers, the entry price of €150,000 at the lower end is interesting, but the average is over €424,000, so do not expect to be able to focus exclusively on the starter segment. Movers who want to live centrally with space for a larger home can also find something here. Mixed feelings

I really enjoy living here, I've only been living here for a short while. But strangely enough, I don't really feel very safe or anything. Maybe because I've been living here for 3 weeks and my license plates were already stolen.. oh well. The accessibility is okay but there are a lot of one-way streets which is a bit annoying because you have to take a detour. You have to pay for parking almost everywhere, so that's a bit of a downside. On the other hand, there are many shops and facilities within easy reach. And there are nice parks and bits of nature. There are many different cultures in one city.
