Living in Nieuw-Rhijngeest, Oegstgeest

Nieuw-Rhijngeest is a relatively young neighbourhood on the western side of Oegstgeest, part of the district Oegstgeest West. The name says it all: it is new-build, largely realised in the 1990s and early 2000s. You can see this in the streetscapes: spacious terraced houses and semi-detached houses with well-kept front gardens, wide pavements and plenty of greenery between the buildings. It is not a neighbourhood that stands out for architectural originality, but rather for its peace and orderliness.

Residents clearly appreciate that peace. Krystal writes: "It is a calming neighbourhood, never much nuisance and always very nice to take a walk because there is a lovely park nearby that is not overcrowded with young people." That walkability is a recurring theme. The greenery in the neighbourhood scores an 8.5 from residents, and anyone who walks there understands why: there are green connections towards the Rhijngeesterpolder and the Klinkenbergerplas, within cycling distance from the front door.

The amenities are remarkably complete for a neighbourhood of this size. Jiayi describes it as follows: "We have a Kruidvat, Jumbo, florist and hairdresser around the corner, and also varied stalls during the week, such as Mabroek, Vietnamese spring rolls, cheese." That is not a standard neighbourhood shopping centre, but a lively street that also has something to offer on weekdays. A supermarket, drugstore and fresh food market within walking distance is a decisive argument for many families.

In terms of accessibility, the neighbourhood scores a 7.5, which is fair. Oegstgeest does not have its own train station. The nearest station is Leiden Centraal, about a ten-minute bike ride away. From there, you can reach The Hague or Amsterdam in twenty minutes. By car, the A44 is easily accessible, towards Schiphol and Amsterdam. Bus connections are available but not exceptionally frequent. For daily commuting by bike to Leiden, the location works well; for those dependent on public transport, it requires a bit more planning.

The resident score of 8.9 out of 10 is high, but also based on two reviews. Nevertheless, the sub-scores are consistent: safety (9.5) and housing (9.5) stand out. That feeling of safety is something residents actively mention, not as a given but as something that distinguishes the neighbourhood. More resident reviews and all neighbourhood data can be found on the page for Nieuw-Rhijngeest.

Compared to neighbouring communities in the district, Nieuw-Rhijngeest is somewhat newer and more family-oriented than, for example, Buitenlust. Those who want to compare more broadly within Oegstgeest can also look at owner-occupied homes in Oegstgeest West as a whole, or at districts such as Oud Oegstgeest for a more historic character.

Does a home to buy in Nieuw-Rhijngeest suit you as a buyer?

Nieuw-Rhijngeest is primarily a family neighbourhood. The largest age group is 25 to 45 years (over 1,195 residents) and the majority of households have children. This is reflected in the playgrounds, the neighbourhood barbecues that residents mention and the schools in the area. First-time buyers will find it difficult: with an average sale price of over €667,000 and a lower limit of €375,000, buying an apartment in Nieuw-Rhijngeest or finding a starter home without substantial personal capital is challenging. Upsizers and dual-income earners with a stable income are more at home here. The high education level (66% highly educated) and labour participation rate of 78% reflect that. Those unsure about buying can also look at rental homes in Nieuw-Rhijngeest as an alternative, although the rental supply is limited given the small share of rental housing in the neighbourhood.

Peaceful

My neighbourhood is always very cosy, with children playing outside and also the annual neighbourhood barbecues. The amenities are absolutely great, we have a Kruidvat, Jumbo, florist and barber around the corner, and also varied stalls during the week, such as mabroek, Vietnamese spring rolls, cheese and a fishmonger. There is also almost never any unrest in our area, very neat and polite people. Nice playgrounds and benches along the water and also a large green park nearby. It is close to the motorway which is handy for the car and public transport is also fine. We have 3 bus lines that pass by in the area, and the nearest one is only a 5-minute walk away. Furthermore, the hygiene is great, always very clean and almost no litter. We have a GP practice in the area and a primary school.
